Although we left it pretty late to pick strawberries this year (most farms around Somerset seem to have run out by this point), we managed to find somewhere not too far away with a decent supply left – Primrose Vale Farm in Gloucestershire.
I’ve wanted to go strawberry picking for a while now, but have so far failed miserably at planning. A week ago I finally ordered my dream lens (Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8). Its arrival was the perfect excuse to head to Primrose Vale Farm. I wanted to see how the lens handled landscapes, portraits and macro photography. Strawberry picking pretty much ticked all of those boxes.
As you can see in the photos below, the ability to shoot at 24mm and maintain a dreamy aperture of f/2.8 is pretty neat.
If you want to visit for strawberry picking, there are daily picking updates on the Primrose Vale Facebook page. It costs around £4.50 per kilogram for strawberries. Not only is that far cheaper than the supermarket, they also taste a lot sweeter. And think of the food miles you’re saving by picking them locally (supermarkets often import strawberries from abroad, even when they are in season here).
And if you leave it too late, it’s worth checking the picking updates to see what else is available. There are loads of other PYO fruits and vegetables between May-September.

Awwwwh! Twin posts!! This was a good day and though we didn’t decide on a winner for the different strawberry categories, like to think I won hands down 😀
